IHI Engineering Australia Pty Ltd (IEA) was established in September, 1971 as a 100% subsidiary of IHI Corporation of Japan to primarily execute the onshore portion of the Oceania projects that were awarded to IHI. It started out with the construction of the then BHP Steel’s No.5 blast furnace (now Blue Scope Steel) still being operated in Port Kembla. This was followed by a total of 15 large-scale pulverized coal fired boilers constructed in the early ’80s to late ’00s in NSW, QLD and WA. In parallel to this, 13 LM6000 gas turbine power generation units were built in VIC and WA, 2 being peaker units and the remaining 11 as power sources for the resources industry.
IEA is also very involved in the maintenance work for the facilities we have delivered in the past, as well as maintenance of units built by other EPC Contractors. The maintenance of coal fired power generation units as well as LM6000 gas turbines has grown into one of the main fields of work that IEA is currently involved in.
IEA continues to contribute to building and maintenance of power generating infrastructure in Australia; supplying reliable power solutions to the resources industry and power generating providers.
It is the intent of the Management to gain stable growth of the company. Therefore, we will continue to be involved in the power industry as before, going out to bid for new projects as well as maintenance jobs. But we do not want to stop just at that, and are exploring new fields of business with support from our parent company’s expertise as well as IEA’s EPC management skills in fields such as renewable energy to support the future of the energy market in Oceania region.
